Why Most Brands Fail Before They Start
The biggest mistake founders make isn't the product — it's launching before they have a clear brand strategy. Without it, every piece of content feels off, the website copy sounds generic, and the sales pitch changes every time someone asks "what do you do?"
A brand strategy isn't a logo or a colour palette. It's the foundation of how your brand thinks, speaks, and shows up across every channel.
The 4 Pillars of a Brand Strategy
Every strong brand is built on four interconnected pillars:
- Positioning: Where you sit in the market relative to competitors.
- Tone of Voice: How you speak — formal or casual, serious or playful.
- Brand Narrative: Your story — why you started, who you help, what you believe.
- Value Proposition: The clear, specific promise you make to your audience.
Skip any one of these and the brand will feel inconsistent — even if the visual identity is perfect.
Start With Positioning, Not Visuals
Most founders start with the logo. This is backwards.
Before you brief a designer, you need to know: who is this brand for, what problem does it solve, and why should anyone care? Positioning answers all three questions in a single, crisp statement.
"For [target audience] who [have this problem], [Brand Name] is the [category] that [delivers this benefit] unlike [competitors] because [reason to believe]."
Write this statement and every future decision — design, copy, pricing, partnerships — becomes much easier to make.
How to Define Your Tone of Voice
Tone of voice is often described as a set of sliders: formal vs. informal, serious vs. playful, technical vs. simple, distant vs. warm. Where you sit on each spectrum shapes every word you write.
A fintech startup targeting CFOs sits very differently from a yoga studio targeting urban millennials. The product might be equally excellent — but the voice needs to match the audience.
Once you have your tone defined, write 6–12 model phrases: how you'd explain your product, how you'd respond to a negative review, how you'd describe a feature. These become your verbal identity guide.
The Brand Narrative That Sells
Your brand story isn't your origin story — it's your customer's journey. The best brand narratives follow a simple hero's arc:
- The hero (your customer) has a problem
- They meet a guide (your brand) who understands
- The guide gives them a plan
- They succeed
Keep yourself in the guide role — not the hero. Your customer's transformation is the story, not your founder journey.
Do You Really Need an Agency?
Agency brand strategies cost between €5,000 and €50,000. For most startups and SMEs, that's not realistic at the early stage. But the alternative — skipping strategy altogether — is worse.
The good news: the core of a brand strategy can be completed in under an hour with the right prompts and frameworks. You know your business better than any agency. The work is structuring what's already in your head.
Building Consistency Across Channels
Once your strategy is defined, consistency is the only job. Every post, email, and ad should sound like it came from the same brand. Test each piece of content against your tone of voice guide before publishing.
A simple question that helps: "Would [brand name] say this?" If the answer is no, rewrite it.
Brand strategy doesn't need to be expensive or complicated. It needs to be honest, specific, and consistently applied. Start with the four pillars, write your positioning statement, and let everything else follow from there.
